LCME Accreditation

Welcome to the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine (ZSOM)  Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) re-accreditation website! The LCME, which is sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and American Medical Association (AMA), is the organization that accredits medical schools in the United States and Canada. The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine is accredited by the Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME). The School received Full Accreditation status in June 2015.

All medical schools must renew their accreditation with the LCME at least every eight years. The LCME survey visit team is coming to Zucker School of Medicine October 20-23, 2019.  This website will be a hub to help you stay up-to-date on the process, share your feedback, and understand of how the overall process affects you as a student, faculty, or staff member.  This is an exciting time for ZSOM and we look forward to sharing this journey with each of you!

  • Why is LCME accreditation important?

    LCME reaccreditation is critical. It enables:

    • Enrolled students to be eligible for the USMLE and to apply for a residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME);
    • The School's eligibility for select federal grants;
    • An opportunity for an in-depth review to ensure that our medical education programs are not only in accordance with LCME accreditation standards, but that they support our mission to redefine medical education.
  • What do I need to know?

    LCME Timeline
    In general, it takes approximately two years to prepare for a survey visit. 

    • Phase I: The Data Collection Instrument (DCI), which is made of up of 12 standards, is populated by written narratives and qualitative and quantitative data from both the Independent Student Analysis (ISA) and the Graduate Questionnaire (GQ).  Upon its completion, the DCI progresses to one of four self-study committees for review. 
    • Phase II: Each of the four self-study committees contains faculty members, staff, and students that will analyze the information that has been gathered and help create a report that will document strengths and recommend workgroups to address weaknesses.
    • Phase III: The final document is approved by a leadership taskforce and then submitted to the LCME for review prior to their site visit. Preparations immediately begin for the site visit in October 2019. 
    • Phase IV: After the survey team concludes their site visit, they produce a final report, evaluating whether we meet the LCME requirements outlined in the 12 standards.    
  • Your role as a student

    As part of the LCME reaccreditation process, a student committee, called the Independent Student Analysis (ISA) committee, conducted a comprehensive survey of the entire student body in the summer of 2018. Student participation was nearly 100% in this process and we thank you for your efforts and willingness to share feedback on our school's strengths and challenges.

    In your responses, you asked leadership to consider change. We heard you, and we are excited to work with together for the betterment of our school. 

  • Continuous Quality Improvement

    Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is an ongoing evaluation process that evaluates how an organization works and ways to improve its processes.
