The Northwell Health System directly sponsors 120 accredited graduate medical education (GME) programs and trains more than 1,500 medical residents and fellows annually. The Health System's Office of Academic Affairs and GME Committee (GMEC) ensures that each GME program provides effective educational experiences that lead to measurable achievement of educational outcomes in the ACGME competencies.
The Office and the GMEC oversee all GME activity, including communication among programs and the residency review committees. The two groups also review reports from site visits and subsequent progress reports to ensure that problems are addressed and additional resources are made available to respond to deficiencies.
The Office of Academic Affairs also oversees the internal review process, which is a major assessment tool used to determine the appropriate level of performance and compliance with all ACGME regulations for all programs.
